NDP Leader Jim Dinn says a recent ATTIPP request has reveals that the provincial government spent more than $10.5 million on emergency shelters in 2022.
Dinn calls that an admission of failure and is calling on government to spend more money repairing NL Housing units and non-market community-based housing to address the province’s growing housing crisis.
Dinn says government must immediately speed up the timelines to repair boarded-up NLHC units before winter. The party also wants government to commit to reallocating the money being spent on private shelters for non-market housing.
Dinn doesn’t have figures for 2023, but he says the crisis is worsening.
The NDP held a panel discussion on the housing crunch last night.
