Today is the first ever Test Your Smoke Alarm Day in Canada.
The theme for the inaugural event is “saved by the beep,” highlighting that the best way to keep people safe during a fire is to ensure that all smoke alarms are in working order.
The provincial government says smoke alarms are required in every room of a house. They recommend testing every alarm, and replacing batteries in those that need it.
They caution that new construction materials and the popularity of open concept living are causing the severity of fires to increase.
As well, fires are breaking out more frequently in bedrooms due to the number of electronic items present.
according to government, last year there were 650 reported fire-related incidents in the province, with seven related deaths.
Anyone seeking help or advice is asked to contact their local fire department.
