Staff at the Gathering Place have voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining CUPE.
The 84 employees provide services, meals and shelter for people in need of emergency shelter.
CUPE organizer Aaron Brickman says voting took place in June and July with 89 per cent of staff in favour of joining the union.
Interim President of the new CUPE Local 5478 Jon Bennet leads the guest support team at the Gathering Place. He says rapid growth within the organization to respond to increased needs was among the reasons why the workers felt the need to form a union.
He says the work is complex and is stressful. He says staff were feeling the need to have more protections and support.
