Local social justice activist Lorraine Michael says she’s ashamed of the Canadian government for not demanding a cease fire in the war in the Middle East.
Michael says while the attacks on Israeli citizens by Hamas October 7 were “horrendous,” equally horrendous is Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, claiming the lives of thousands of civilians.
U-N Secretary-General Antonio Guterres this week condemned the killing of civilians as Israeli warplanes bombed a refugee camp near Gaza City two days in a row.
Michael says a growing number of people around the world are calling for a cease fire.
She says Canada needs to have a stronger voice at the UN level and while a cease fire won’t solve the problem, it will allow discussions on underlying issues.
According to numbers released by Hamas, some 8,800 lives were lost in the bombardment of a refugee camp.
Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu this week indicated that a cease fire would be tantamount to surrender to Hamas.
Another rally calling for a cease fire is scheduled for St. John’s this Sunday.
