The leader of the federal NDP says the housing crisis across the rest of the country has made its way to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Jagmeet Singh addressed party members and supporters at the party’s annual convention virtually yesterday.
Singh says previously, affordable housing was not a concern for Newfoundland and Labrador but now, it very much is, with few to no units available. He says under Liberal and Conservative governments, the dream of home ownership has gotten further and further away.
“No one should ever have to live in a tent city in a country as rich as ours. That is wrong.”
Singh says strictly building more affordable market housing is not enough. He says a part of the solution has to be building more social, community, co-operative and not-for-profit housing.
