The Interpersonal Violence Disclosure Protocol Act, better known as Clare’s Law, is now in force in the province but some who wish to avail of it may have difficulty wading through the twists and turns of the legislation. There’s an organization in the province that can help.
The new law allows people who feel they may be at risk of abuse from their current or former partner to apply for, and obtain, personal background information including any criminal records, about them.
Emma Duke, a legal support navigator with the Journey Project, sees the law as a useful tool to create another avenue for people who fear for their safety and well-being.
She says the Journey Project can provide assistance, including going with an applicant to the police station if that’s the route chosen.
Duke says the support piece is built into the law which allows the Journey Project to accompany an applicant through the process, including the in-person component.
