The province’s justice minister does not believe that Newfoundland and Labrador will ever have one single police force.
Yesterday government announced the creation of a Policing Transformation Working Group to evaluate the current policing model and make recommendations.
Currently, the RNC serve Corner Brook, St. John’s metro, Churchill Falls and Labrador West, while the RCMP cover all other areas.
While the group will be looking at possible alternatives to the current structure, John Hogan does not foresee a time when the province will be transitioned to one single police force.
He says the province is fortunate to have two police forces that complement each other.
Meanwhile, the RNC Association, which represents members of the Constabulary, welcomes the review.
RNCA President, Staff Sergeant Mike Summers says times are changing and policing is changing.
“We have to keep up with the times,” says Summers “and it will be interesting to see what comes out of this review.”
