Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will present the Fall Economic Statement around suppertime today, and it’s expected to include billions of dollars in low-cost loans to builders to kickstart housing construction.
In addition, there could be measures aimed to help local government deal with short-term rentals.
A new poll by the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation shows that three out of every four people in the Atlantic region do not like the federal government’s carve-out on the carbon tax geared primarily towards them.
Ottawa announced a few weeks ago that oil used for home heat would be exempt from the carbon tax for three years but the federation’s poll found that 77 per cent of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians want the tax exempt from all types of home heat right across the country. The result in Newfoundland and Labrador is consistent with the numbers from the Maritimes.
Jay Goldberg, a VP with the Taxpayers’ Federation, says Atlantic Canada does not agree with preferences being given to one type of heating fuel over another.
Goldberg says people are worried about what will happen once the three-year exemption expires.
