The federal government is restoring employment insurance benefits to cover what would have been a four-week gap for many seasonal workers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Yesterday’s Fall Economic Statement proposes four additional weeks of EI regular benefits for eligible workers in 13 economic zones including NL.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, speaking on Your VOCM Mornings, said the new measure will cost about $70 million over three years. It’s designed to help many, including those who work in the fishery.
She says the measure is especially helpful for Newfoundland and Labrador—in particular people who earn their living from the fishery.
