Social work students and their professor were joined by members of the NDP in a rally outside city hall today asking for access to toilets for resident-protestors at what’s being called the Tent City for Change.
A group of Social Work students at Memorial University are rallying at City Hall St John’s pushing for 24 hour washrooms for the Temt City Demonstration at the Colonial Building.
Now chanting, “In the dark, in the light, unlock the bathrooms…it’s they’re right”.

The protest encampment next to Colonial Building has been in place for some time.
Social work students dropped a toilet wrapped in chains on the steps of city hall to protest a lack of 24/7 access to toilets for resident-protestors. The group went inside to meet Mayor Danny Breen, but were disappointed by his absence.

The city meanwhile says it made the “difficult decision” to close restroom facilities in city parks at 8:00 p.m. due to increased vandalism, and health and safety concerns for residents and staff.
The city says while it understands it is a complex situation, it is not resourced to ensure the bathrooms can safely remain open at night.
