A Carbonear man under a lifetime driving ban is now accused of causing a crash that left a teenager in serious condition.
Seventy-four-year-old George Malcolm Whalen was convicted in 2017 of impaired driving causing the death of 83-year-old Jane Newhook in Thornlea, Trinity Bay.
His sentence included a ban on driving for life.
But Whalen is now charged with failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm, and driving while prohibited, after a hit and run crash in Carbonear last week between an SUV and a dirt bike.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. last Thursday afternoon on Saddle Hill in the town, with the teenage driver of the dirt bike rushed to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the SUV, believed to be Whalen, left the scene of the crash.
He was arrested, charged and released from custody pending a court date in January.
