Some schools on the Avalon Peninsula are shutting down outright while others are opting for early dismissal as Mother Nature bears down on the east.
The system will begin as rain this morning but then turn to snow this afternoon as the temperature drops.
A total of close to 10 cm is expected in the afternoon hours on the Avalon and points near with another 5 to 10 coming tonight. Winds begin at about 30 km/h in the daylight hours before picking up tonight to 60 to 70 km/h.
Generally, schools in metro will dismiss an hour sooner than normal while schools in Trinity-Conception are not going to open at all.
Meteorologist Allison Sheppard says they have issued snowfall warnings—10 to 20 cm for the east and south coasts but 20 cm for the Avalon with upwards of 30 cm in higher terrain.
