A local arts and literature magazine is looking for help to stay afloat in the wake of rising inflation and printing costs.
Riddle Fence, a quarterly magazine started in 2007, publishes local poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, features and reviews accompanied by contemporary art. The publication aims to bring local work across Canada and has featured some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most prominent artists.
Now, however, the magazine is turning to the public for help through a rough patch.
Executive Director Elisabeth de Mariaffi says with inflation driving up the cost of printing and distribution, the magazine is looking at an unanticipated and serious budget shortfall.

She says every issue is more expansive than the last, which has made budgeting very difficult given the “shifting sands of cost”.
She says the magazine fills a vital role, as it often provides writers with their first publication.
De Mariaffi says without that first publication, it is difficult to launch your career. With a publication, artists can apply for grants, seek an editor or agent or approach a gallery.
