Flights are getting back on track at St. John’s International Airport today after an incident this morning which raised concerns about security.
An unattended package was spotted near a Christmas tree close to the check-in terminal, at about 5:15 a.m. so the airport enacted its security response. They swabbed the package, and the test turned up traces of a chemical which is used in explosives.
They contacted the RNC who determined that no security threat was present.
YYT President and CEO Dennis Hogan says the chemical is also used for other purposes. He says the substance is used in such things as cosmetics and varnishes.
They located the person who had left the package and it turned out to be more of a misunderstanding than anything according to Hogan.
