The team at St. John’s Sports and Entertainment is working on strategies to increase activities at Mary Brown’s Centre and the Convention Centre in the coming year.
The organization’s subsidy was increased in the 2024 City of St. John’s budget, now reaching a total of $7 million annually.
Mayor Danny Breen notes a more significant recovery at the Convention Centre compared to Mary Brown’s Centre, which he links to pandemic-related challenges. Specifically, he points out that artists are touring less frequently, especially in this region.
Additionally, Breen says the structure of contracts for hosting acts has changed.
He says the SJSE team is developing a new business plan to adapt to these changes and is optimistic about seeing improvements in 2024-25.
