Speed cameras established in Mount Pearl and Paradise last year picked up 94,000 vehicles travelling at speeds more than 11 km/h over the limit over the length of the 3-month pilot program.
The speed cams were set up initially to gather information on the extent of the problem.
Service NL Minister Sara Stoodley says that averages out to about 500 speeders a day, a number that she found eye-opening.

Of the 94,000, about 25 per cent were logged travelling at speeds of more than 20 km/h over the maximum.
Stoodley says the department is now looking at expanding the use of speed cams in the province by establishing cameras on provincial highways and working with municipalities who have reached out to the department.
Before they do that however, they have to figure out how to address enforcement without creating undue administrative strain.
“Our team (is) really focused on coming up with a solution that is as automated as possible to cut down on administrative burden, and they have multiple government departments focused on coming up with a solution that doesn’t clog up the justice system, but that helps to improve road safety and, ideally, reduce the number of people speeding on our roadways.”
She hopes to have speed cams more widely in use in the province this year.
