The provincial government and the PC party are at odds over information around 24 hour snow clearing.
PC MHA Loyola O’Driscoll began raising the alarm last week, demanding that government reinstate access to 24-hour snow clearing, something which was cut in the 2016 budget.
The department fired back, saying that there has never been 24-hour snow clearing on all provincially owned roads. Rather, the program that was eliminated in 2016 was a pilot program for high traffic areas of the TCH and some trunk roads.
Government says 24-hour clearing is done on 14 high traffic routes, and crews are on stand by in case of emergency.
In a emailed statement to VOCM News, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says the criticism from the PCs on snow clearing “has been grossly misleading and is essentially fearmongering.”
O’Driscoll says many people have reached out to him since he began speaking out.
As an example, he says he had someone reach out to him who was travelling from Argentia to St. John’s after 10:00 at night. He says he never saw a snow plow from Argentia to CBS.
