Since the Pope offered dispensation to local Catholics declaring seal meat as fish, seal has been a Good Friday favourite for many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Taylor’s has been doing a steady business on the St. John’s waterfront ahead of Good Friday.
Heidi Taylor says while this year’s fishery won’t open for another week or so, they’ve been selling frozen flipper from last year, and they’ll be open today and for a few hours tomorrow morning to give people time to get it prepared.
Taylor is also selling fish, but says older customers seem to prefer their seal for a traditional flipper pie.
“They bake it in the oven like a stew with a pastry and the vegetables, the traditional way – that’s about it but we’ll see you back here around the 16th, 17th of April with fresh seal flippers.”
