The Newfoundland Growlers have ceased operations as of today.
Dean MacDonald, Chair of Deacon Sports and Entertainment, says they presented an offer for the sale of both the Growlers and the Trois Rivieres Lions, but the offer was declined, with only the Lions salvaged.
MacDonald, who broke the news on VOCM’s Tim Powers Show, says players under AHL contract will either go on to play with the Toronto Marlies or their season will end. Those under ECHL contract have now become unrestricted free agents.

He recognizes the team has had its share of challenges over the years, but is taken aback by the news that the team could not be salvaged by a new buyer.
Refunds for the remaining home games will be processed by the Mary Browns Centre box office.
St. John’s Sports & Entertainment is “extremely disappointed” with the news.
In a statement issued immediately following the news on Tuesday, the organization says it was fully engaged with the Commissioner of the ECHL and Growlers leadership in supporting efforts to reach a resolution.
St. John’s Sports & Entertainment says it understands how disheartening the news is for the community, Growlers fans and the many partners who supported the team.
It says it remains committed to “pursuing all opportunities” as it works to be the “premiere sport and entertainment” facility in the province.
