World Energy GH2’s massive wind energy project proposed for Newfoundland’s southwest coast has been green lit by the province’s environment department.
The announcement was made early this afternoon.
A decision on the proposal by billionaire John Risley was expected last fall but the province said it needed more information regarding water use and monitoring, as well as “the potential and cumulative effects of the project, along with mitigation plans, contingency plans and emergency response plans.”
The amendments were made in January are were followed by a nearly two-month window for public input.
In a news release today, Environment Minister Bernard Davis stated no further work is required for the environmental assessment and amendment, and the project has been released from that process.
It would see more than 300 wind turbines erected on the Port au Port Peninsula and Codroy Valley, as well as a hydrogen-ammonia plant in the area.
Davis says some 60 conditions have been put on the project, and they will need to receive close to 100 permits from all three levels of government.
In terms of the conditions, Davis breaks them down into three categories: pre-construction conditions, conditions on the construction phase itself and conditions on the life of the entire project.
