A new soccer tournament modeled after the single-elimination format such as that used by the NCAA for March Madness kicks off tomorrow on several fronts across the island.
The NL Cup will be played on three fields in metro and two on the west coast starting at 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
Patrick Hickey, a member of the competition committee of Soccer NL, says players in three categories will square off over the next few months. Male teams in Challenge Cup, intermediate and masters are involved in the inaugural year, but Hickey hopes to expand the tournament to include females next year.
He says they fashioned the format after the FA Cup in the UK.
Hundreds of teams are involved in the chase for that trophy.
