A number of creative and outstanding projects proposed for the coast of Labrador were chosen to receive some much-welcomed funding during the Arctic Inspiration Awards in Whitehorse Yukon Tuesday night.
A team of young people from Hopedale won $1 million dollars to bring their dream of a cultural centre to life. The group wants to develop greater pride and proficiency in Inuktitut through a not-for-profit cultural centre in Hopedale.
Other local projects will also receive substantial funding, including close to $300,000 dollars for the reunion of those original surviving residents of Hebron and Nutak to come together in Okkak Bay this summer. The communities were forcibly relocated in the late 1950s, with residents sent to Nain and other communities on the north coast of Labrador.
Meanwhile L.O.V.E. Inuktut, a program developed to revitalize and safeguard the 11 main dialects of Inuktut received an award of $100,000.
