The province has announced the grade configuration for the new school being planned for Kenmount Terrace.
The school will be for kindergarten to grade seven in both the English and French streams, and will include capacity for pre-kindergarten.
Government anticipates that when it is finished the school will be the largest in the province, with capacity for over 850 students.
They say further decisions on current school infrastructure in the catchment area will be made once work on teacher allocation and class composition is completed.
Parents Doubtful School Will Be Ready by 2026
The school community just can’t see how a new school in Kenmount Terrace will be ready in time for the 2026 year. Government assures that it will be, but to some, that sounds like an ambitious target date given that there has been little activity so far.
There are property issues as government has said expropriation will be required. A similar situation with the acquisition of private property has been cited as one of the issues delaying construction of the final stage of the Gushue Extension.
Darrell Hines, a parent with the Leary’s Brook Junior High School Council, is calling on government to hold a public meeting in the area to answer questions and provide clarification.
He says there is just nothing happening right now so if they’re going to have a school ready in Sept. 2026 for 800 children, that will be one of the greatest accomplishments government will have ever achieved.
He says his school and nearby Larkhall Academy are bursting at the seams.
Leary’s Brook currently has 500 students but will have 560 come September because of a temporary reconfiguration plan until the new school is ready. “I hope it helps others because it certainly is not helping Leary’s Brook Jr. High.”
