A record high temperature was set in the St. John’s metro region today.
As of 3 p.m., the mercury had reached 29 C at St. John’s International Airport, several ticks above the previous high of 25.6 C for June 20th in 1970.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says temperatures exceeded 30 C in central Newfoundland, which also broke previous records.
That includes, Gander, Badger and Terra Nova, as well as portions of the east and south coasts.
There will be some relief by this evening, however, with many areas due for a cool down.
Temperatures are expected to stay around the low 20s throughout the weekend in the metro region, with partly cloudy conditions.
Heat warnings remain in place for the west coast of the island.
