Wabush is still without electricity because of the situation at the Churchill Falls power plant, and it’s unclear when they will be back on the grid.
Labrador City is being serviced by an emergency connection via Fermont, Quebec but Wabush was not able to connect to that feed, which meant they were without power overnight.
The Salvation Army Labrador West Community Church is opening their doors today to those who’d like to drop by to have a meal and charge up their mobile devices.
Lunch and supper will be served.
Wabush Mayor Ron Barron says there is a massive fire about 35 km south of the town—not threatening at the moment but that could change at any time.
The mayor says cell phone service has been an issue for years but it has been particularly problematic the past week or so with many dropped calls and other interruptions.
The town has imposed a boil order, and Mayor Barron says there will be a potable water station set up in Labrador City.
He is urging people to be patient and urges anybody with an issue or question to contact the town.
