Some personal stories are emerging in the aftermath of a fire that ripped through eight NL Housing units in St. John’s on Monday.
A mom and daughter who, by chance, were in Labrador, the search and rescue of Midnight, the cat, and still uncertain fate of one man’s teeth.
But above all, no injuries.
The fire broke out shortly after 8 a.m. on Empire Avenue, across from Monchy Street, but warm winds pushed the telltale smell of smoke as far as downtown.
In all, eight Housing units were affected, but it’s unclear exactly how many residents are displaced.
And while some neighbours wonder about recent suspicious fires on nearby Holyes Avenue, others don’t believe they’re connected.
“Me, personally, I think somebody forgot about something and … boom. But when you’re getting woke up out of bed and your head’s not on straight, and you’re like, oh, you’re running. I mean I don’t wish this on anybody but, ya know, you got to be watching what you’re doing with stoves or barbeques or whatever.”
The Red Cross is providing temporary housing for displaced residents while government addresses a longer-term solution.
