The Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association is calling on Ottawa to introduce 100 per cent tariffs on all Chinese-built ships.
It’s hoped that adoption of the protectionist measure will boost the local shipbuilding industry which has lost a lot of business to Chinese shipyards of late.
Local Master Mariner Kris Drodge isn’t sure whether that’s a measure the federal government is willing to take, but says many feel it would be an opportunity for local shipbuilders.
“Now whether that’s effective or not, or what actions are taken, that will have some effect on our shipbuilding industry here in Canada. And certainly as we continue to build up that type of professional capacity…this will be very important for years to come.”
