A Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s councillor is not taking his recent suspension lying down.
Darryl Harding was suspended in early October after two independent reports done for the town concluded his behaviour amounted to workplace harassment of colleagues and staff.
Specifically, they focused on his actions during council meetings last year, including repeated interruptions that triggered lengthy and testy disputes.
Harding was suspended for three months, but he’s now challenging that in Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the town has served notice that it will ask the court to extend the suspension to the end of the current term next fall.
Court dates have yet to be set for those arguments.
In the meantime, the bills continue to mount for the town — with almost $100,000 spent to date on the two reports and court actions.
It’s not Harding’s first suspension.
He was also sanctioned in early 2023 following findings that he harassed or sexually harassed several people and broke rules around fundraising for his own GoFundMe campaign after he was in a car accident.
He also had a very public dustup with the provincial PC party earlier this year over his failed nomination in the Conception Bay East-Bell Island byelection.
