The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of a missing Canadian Coast Guard employee has been solved.
RCMP say that the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that remains found in Placentia Bay on October 19 were those of a crewmember reported missing at sea on September 16.
Coast Guard officials discovered that the veteran member was missing when the icebreaker Vincent Massey docked in St. John’s harbour.
An extensive search was conducted for Jocelyn de Varennes of Quebec City but was eventually called off when no trace was found.
Last week, human remains were found in the water outside Placentia Bay.
De Varennes, an electrical officer, was awarded the Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal back in 2018.
