Legislation to formalize the end of Nalcor Energy is making its way through the provincial legislature.
The province announced in 2021 that Nalcor would be folded into Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
While that process has largely been completed, the new Hydro Corporation Act will formalize the legal merger of the two Crown corporations.
The act, when passed, ensures all assets and obligations of the corporations will continue under the new NL Hydro and provide continuity of employment for employees.
Also, a new provision under the act gives the minister responsible explicit legislative authority to request documents from the corporation, and protections for commercially sensitive information have been narrowed to information relating to oil and gas activities only.
Both of those changes are due to an ATIPPA review conducted by Chief Justice David Orsborn.
