Over 200 residents gathered in the City of Mount Pearl last night to voice their concerns over community safety following a series of violent attacks in recent weeks.
One by one, community members expressed their concerns to Mount Pearl Council, MHAs and the RNC.
Police answered what they could, but were unable to answer all questions due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Trent Langdon from the NLTA relayed he’s interacted with students who are showing up in schools with weapons for self-defence because the school system doesn’t feel safe for students.
Maybe one of the most impactful speakers of the night was the wife of the man who was reportedly hit outside the Mount Pearl School.
Bailey Rempel says the attacks have caused significant fear for her family.
She described the phone call in which the husband was heard shouting into the phone that he was alleged to have been attacked and hit in the head with a baseball bat.
The speech, which went on for nearly five minutes, outlined calls to both the municipal and provincial governments for action. It was followed by standing ovations from the crowd.
Area MHA Paul Lane was disappointed that Justice Minister Bernard Davis was not in attendance for last night’s meeting.
Federal MP Seamus O’Regan was also invited to the meeting but did not show up.
The city is now planning on releasing a report in the new year based on the findings from the meeting.
