Just as the energy and communications sectors call for stiffer penalties for the theft of copper wire, RCMP in Whitbourne are investigating the theft of copper wire from an NL Hydro communications site on the Trans Canada Highway near Long Harbour.
RCMP were contacted on Tuesday, December 10th. Surveillance images showed three masked perpetrators arriving on the scene in an SUV around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 8th.
The suspects forced their way inside a gated area and stole a quantity of copper wire.
The vehicle used is described as dark in colour with a driver-side tail light that was not working.
Industry officials told the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications last week that the incidence of copper wire theft has skyrocketed in recent years and while tighter security is in place, they’re calling on Ottawa to impose stiffer sentences and penalties.
