New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt might be headed for a confrontation with the federal government over $70 million in tax revenue the province will lose as a result of the federal sales tax holiday.
But it’s not clear if Newfoundland and Labrador will follow suit.
Holt says New Brunswick is entitled to the money under a federal-provincial agreement, and won’t waive the right.
But new federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc says there won’t be a reimbursement.
That province, as with Newfoundland and Labrador, has a 15 per cent HST, which has been waived on many items until Feb. 15.
NL Finance Minister Siobhan Coady has said the measure will cost this province about $42 million, but it doesn’t appear she is demanding full reimbursement from Ottawa, at least not yet.
“We’re always talking to the federal government about investments that they should be making in the province, and you can be rest assured that I’m doing that,” said Coady.
