The Christmas season is a time of celebration, but how much is too much, if you choose to drink?
Guidelines released in 2023 by the Canadian Centre of Substance Use and Addiction suggested that those who drink, limit their consumption to two drinks per week to reduce risk.
Alcohol is a known carcinogen, and the Canadian Cancer Society has suggested that drinking the equivalent of 3 and a half drinks per day doubles or even triples the risk of developing a range of cancers including the mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus.
Host of the VOCM Wellness and Healthy Lifestyle Show, Dr. Mike Wahl, says having a few drinks over the holidays is a part of holiday tradition for many cultures, especially in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Like it or not says Wahl, the science shows that the consumption of alcohol does have health effects – the key is finding a balance.
Wahl says the health effects are well known, however the reality is that many people do enjoy a few drinks over the holidays. A small amount of alcohol represents a small amount of risk, while a large amount, represents a larger risk. The balance everyone is looking for, says Wahl, is how to consume alcohol in a way that is safe while still being able to enjoy the holidays.
Wahl says the social benefits of gathering with others does have a positive impact on our overall health.
“I’ve never been one to promote absolute abstinence from things; I think that there’s a balance we all have to reach,” say Wahl. “What listeners have to figure out what the right amount is,” so that they can benefit from some of that social interaction and connection without sacrificing their long-term health.
