The province’s two police forces teamed up at a checkpoint on the Southern Shore Highway just outside Bay Bulls yesterday afternoon to check for drivers who are impaired or compromised in some other manner.
They will be doing more of that over the holiday season, a time when party activity and visiting ramps up significantly.
Cpl. Jolene Garland of the RCMP says their checkpoints will be set up at random times and locations.
Cpl. Garland says impaired driving happens at all times of the day and evening, not just after dark.
Last week, a woman coming upon an RNC checkpoint on Portugal Cove Road in St. John’s abruptly turned around to avoid officer, but Cst. Mike Shea of the RNC says that will not work as they always have containment vehicles.
Cst. Shea says they will have “chase” vehicles on either side of the line in case anybody tries to avoid detection.
Random spot checks will continue through the holiday period.
