The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is urging the public to review some safety precautions over the busy Christmas season.
Fire prevention officer Cara Pardy says chimneys should be inspected and cleaned regularly.
She also emphasizes the importance of keeping flammable decorations, including ornaments and Christmas trees, at a safe distance from the fireplace.
“Every year you should have your chimney for your wood burning fireplace or wood stove inspected to make sure that it’s in good working condition and that there are no cracks in it. Also, it should be professionally cleaned every year to prevent the buildup of creosote which could cause a chimney fire. Any propane appliances should be inspected annually as well just to make sure that they’re burning as efficiently as they can be,” she said.
