A federal election may be coming sooner rather than later, and Premier Andrew Furey has several things he wants commitments on from whichever party takes office.
One of those asks is for a federal government that will commit to revisiting the equalization formula – which is something government is taking the current federal government to court on.
Secondly, Furey wants to see resource development be a priority.
He wants to see less regulatory constraints in developing oil and gas, mining, and hydroelectric projects.
Furey also wants a commitment for joint management on the fishery.
To highlight the need for joint management, he says some of the decisions made in 2024 on northern cod were “mind blowing” and “don’t make any sense.” He further calls the decision to end the cod moratorium “short sighted and ill-prepared.”
