An angry ocean smashed into coastal areas along the northeast coast and the Avalon Peninsula today, causing widespread damage and destruction.
Storm surge, one of the most destructive elements of a weather system, struck many areas, collapsing some sheds and stripping siding, smashing windows, and tossing loose items around like confetti. The RNC have told people to be aware of flying debris – things such as road signs scattered everywhere.

Winds hit triple digits in many areas, including the metro region. Mother Nature has called off some aspects of the assault, such as wind speed, but storm surge warnings continue until about midnight. Waves will continue to be 20-30 feet larger than normal when they break on shore. Dozens of communities, including metro, will have a lot of damage to contend with.
The storm surge washed out roads in beach areas, including Conception Bay North, so transportation officials are assessing the affected areas.
The Town of Gambo has declared a state of emergency. Parts of Brigus are underwater. The Lions Club in Lewisporte has been heavily damaged.
Planes and ferries were affected.
Pictures and video circulating online of the damage are dramatic.
