Applying to medical school can be expensive, but a new initiative at Memorial University, known as the Vision Program, seeks to alleviate the burden by covering some application fees for applicants from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Admissions officer Lisa Breen explains that while med school is an undergraduate degree, it’s the second undergraduate degree.
An applicant has to complete many tasks before they can apply and write the entrance exam.
Dr. Amanda Tzenov, assistant dean for admissions at the Faculty of Medicine, says they have only just rolled out the program, but they are confident that it will encourage more potential doctors to take that step.
She says having diversity in that field in Newfoundland and Labrador is very important, and she thinks this measure will help in that regard.
