RCMP are warning the public about scams and fraudulent activity in circulation after a west coast senior was scammed out of more than ten thousand dollars. VOCM’s Linda Swain reports.
Deer Lake RCMP were recently involved in the investigation of the unauthorized use of a credit card. The suspect racked up more than $11,000 in purchases without the permission of the card’s owner, a person the RCMP describes as a vulnerable senior.
The investigation led to the identification and arrest of the suspect, who now faces a charge of unauthorized use of a credit card. The accused is set to appear in court at a later date.
RCMP advise that if you suspect that you or a loved one has been the victim of fraud or a scam to gather all information you can, including documents, receipts, and copies of emails or text messages.
It’s also important to contact your financial institution and reach out to your local RCMP or RNC to report the incident.
Store all financial information in a safe place, ensure that credit cards are not accessible, and keep online passwords security stored and regularly update your passwords on online shopping sites and financial institutions.
If you’re shopping for items on Marketplace or Kijiji, never pay for an item before you receive it, and never purchase gift cards on behalf of someone you do not know.
