PC housing critic Joedy Wall claims that transitional housing established at the former Comfort Inn Hotel in St. John’s has left east end residents “fearful to leave their homes,” because of what he says has been an increase in break-ins, drug use and illegal activity.
The provincial government is leasing the hotel property for $7 million a year for three years to provide transitional housing and wrap-around mental health and addictions supports for those struggling to find safe, affordable housing.
Since then, Wall claims the RNC have been conducting increased patrols in the area because of an increase in crime, leaving residents living “in fear.”
He is calling for a public meeting with government official to discuss concerns and to enhance security around the facility.
