The cause of a fire that destroyed the Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake last October and claimed the life of a man who was staying there as a guest, remains under investigation.
The fire broke out around 7:00 on the morning of Saturday, October 19.
A girls volleyball team from Bishop’s Falls was staying at the hotel at the time, and some parents and staff took heroic action to make sure everyone was up and out of the building as it filled with smoke.
Unfortunately, 77-year-old Eugene Spoon, an avid American hunter who had come to Newfoundland to bag his very first moose, wasn’t so lucky.
His remains were found in his room after the fire was extinguished.
