The leader of the provincial NDP is calling for a “comprehensive review” of all legislation related to the collection and management of personal information.
Jim Dinn’s call comes after government revealed earlier this week that 271,000 students and 14,000 teachers had their data compromised in the PowerSchool security breach.
Dinn says there is a “lack of accountability” from government on safeguarding personal information, noting that if shouldn’t matter if it is a public body or a third party company, it is government’s duty to ensure information is protected.
He says there is nothing in current legislation that specifically applies to contracted companies that collect data.
Dinn points out that during the spring sitting of the House of Assembly he called for government to explore data sovereignty legislation, claiming existing legislation doesn’t go far enough.
