Cancellations are now coming in due to stormy weather on the Avalon Peninsula.
It began snowing on the southern Avalon this morning, and that has now spread to metro.
Close to 15 cm is forecast but that will be compounded by winds gusting to 80kmh, reducing visibility.
Treacherous road conditions
Traffic was delayed on Topsail Road after a vehicle ended up on its roof near Fun n’ Fast shortly after the snow hit.
RCMP on the Avalon meanwhile are advising drivers to avoid all unessential travel on the Trans Canada due to extremely poor driving conditions.
White outs are reported in the Salmonier Line and Paddy’s Pond areas and roads are snow covered and extremely slippery.
Drivers are being asked to stay off the roads if at all possible.
Closures and cancellations
Provincial government offices in the metro region are closing at noon for the remainder of the day, except for those employees have otherwise been advised by their departments to report to work.
Metrobus services suspended for the day
Metrobus and GoBus are pulling buses off the roads at 3:00 and will resume operations at the usual time tomorrow.
MUN and Marine Institute closed
Meanwhile, today’s stormy weather has forced the cancellation of all daytime and evening classes at Memorial University’s St. John’s and Signal Hill campuses and the Marine Institute.
The child care centre is also closed for the day.
All evening exams administered by CITL will be rescheduled.
Students and instructors can access remote and online courses via Brightspace, and unless otherwise advised, remotely delivered and online courses are going ahead as scheduled.
All cancellations and delays can be found under the VOCM Storm Watch page.
