Newfoundland and Labrador has lost a legendary figure in its traditional music scene. Acclaimed accordionist Frank Maher has passed away.
Born in 1934 in St. John’s, Maher was a master of the button accordion, deeply influencing Newfoundland folk music. He played with groups like the Quidi Vidi Minstrels and the Newfoundland Kitchen Band and later formed his own group, Maher’s Bahers, carrying on the province’s musical traditions.
In recognition of his contributions, Maher received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the St. John’s Folk Arts Council in 2003 and was honored with the Stompin’ Tom Award from the East Coast Music Association in 2007.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Maher would have turned 91 on March 7th
