The Department of Transportation is responding to concerns raised by a transport truck driver whose rig jack knifed on the Trans Canada near Springdale Junction earlier this week.
John Oliver told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that there was no salt on the road and black ice caused him to lose control of his rig.
He claims he was told that the trucks could not leave the depot until 8:00 a.m. and called on government to reinstate 24-hour road maintenance.
The Department of Transportation says the snow plow was in the area at the time of the accident which occurred around 6:00 a.m. Monday. The plow, which was spreading salt, was heading east at that time, turned around at Badger around 7:00 and was back at the accident scene around 8:00 a.m. The department says salt spreads across a portion of the opposite lane, with full ice control in place on the return trip.
