Some alcohol is going to cost more in the next while, although it’s unclear as to just when the tax hike will kick in.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on all party leaders to commit to ending the escalator tax that increases federal tax on alcohol every year on April 1st without a vote in Parliament.
Federal alcohol taxes are due to rise by two per cent on April 1st, but instead of layering tax hikes on top of tariffs, the federation says Ottawa should cut taxes to make Canadian businesses more competitive.
The organization says taxes from multiple levels of government account for about half of the price of alcohol.
