A business owner in Paradise is sounding the alarm after he says reciprocal tariffs by Ottawa on the United States could put him out of business.
Chris Power owns Marine Dreams, a company that buys used boats in the United States, brings them here to be reconditioned, and resold.
Power says they buy sport fishing boats, which they can only get from the eastern seaboard of the United States, so there is no option to buy from within Canada.
He says the difference between the Canadian and U.S. dollar already makes the business challenging.
For example, Power explains that a boat listed for $50,000 in the United States will cost them $70,000 in Canadian currency.
Despite the challenge, they have found ways to make the business work.
But, Power states that with the 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs imposed by Ottawa, they are “being put out of business by (their) own government.”
He says people selling into the U.S. will make money off the exchange rate, but the reciprocal tariffs will be the “death knell” for any company purchasing from that country.
