The 39-year-old scored in the second period to overtake Wayne Grezky’s record of 894 goals.

Gretzky noted in his speech at the game on Long Island Sunday afternoon that when he broke Gordie Howe’s record, they gave him a Rolls Royce.
Following the game, Ovechkin began his on-ice speech by saying “What a day, huh?”

One of the more incredible elements of his career is that the Russian winger has had 14 seasons with 40 or more goals and this year, despite missing five weeks with a broken leg, is third in the NHL in goal scoring.
