A former broadcaster and interim Green Party leader has released a book that she calls “a rallying cry against political apathy.”
Jo-Ann Roberts, a former CBC radio host in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and British Columbia is out with her take on electoral reform; “Storm the Ballot Box – An Insider’s Guide to a Voting Revolution.”
She says that up to 40 per cent of Canadians who are eligible to vote, don’t. She jokes that the most frightening thing for most Canadian politicians is if those 40 per cent of voters suddenly showed up on election day to cast their ballot, because no-body knows which way it will go.
She’s not advocating for compulsory voting, but she is suggesting making some changes to bring voter turnout up.
“If I had my way, we would hold an election on a Saturday, not a Monday. Make it a holiday, we would celebrate the fact that we’re voting.”
